Revand Chini, also known as Indian Rhubarb, is a powerful medicinal herb that is widely utilised in the Indian Unani school of medicine to treat a variety of health issues.
It is a flowering plant in the Polygonaceae family, also known as the Buckwheat family, with the scientific name Rheum emodi.

This medicinal herb is thought to offer a variety of restorative characteristics, including astringent, absorbent, and mild laxatives that can help with diarrhoea, anorexia, constipation, and bronchitis, to name a few. 

At a height of 4000m, the plant is extensively dispersed throughout the sub-alpine and alpine Himalayas from Kashmir to Sikkim across India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
The stem is tough, green, and has brownish stripes.

The leaves are heart-shaped or roundish with a greenish-red heart-shaped base, and basal leaves can grow up to 60 cm broad. The floral blossoms are rich reddish-purple in colour and grow in densely branching clusters on an inflorescence up to 30 cm long from late spring to summer. It produces purple-colored fruits that are around 1-2 cm long.
The rhizome is sturdy, brown in colour, and has thicker bark, and it is commonly employed in a variety of compositions. 

Chemical Constituents Of Revand Chini:

Several bioactive substances have been identified in Revand Chini, including emodin, emodin-3-monomethyl ether, chrysophanol, aloe-emodin, and rhein. These are found in the free states as quinone, anthrone or dianthroneglycosides. According to phytochemical investigation, Revand Chini includes a high concentration of cinnamic and rheinolic acids, volatile oil, starch, and calcium oxalate. Two important glycoside active principles, sennoside A and B, as well as free anthraquinones, are present and have been linked to a variety of therapeutic advantages.

Uses Of Revand Chini

In Ayurveda, Revand Chini is known as Amlavetasa; the roots of this herb are dried to manufacture ayurvedic formulations. The pungent and bitter taste of root extracts soothes Vata and Kapha but aggravates Pitta. The powdered root is used to clean teeth, treat pimples and acne, and provide other healing benefits.

Revand Chini is widely used to treat digestive issues such as constipation, indigestion, and flatulence.
