The Marking Nut Tree, also known as Semecarpus anacardium, is a deciduous tree native to the Himalayas.
The tree was dubbed the "marking nut" because people used to mark their clothing before washing them.

Its fruit is a 1-inch oblong black and smooth drupe situated on a fleshy cup.
The juice of the fruit can be used as a dye.
The fruit is compared to a cashew because it has two parts: the upper piece, which is sweet and edible when ripe, and the lower portion, which is a smooth, black nut.
