The Bhoj Patra Tree is a tree widely found in the Himalayas, well-known for the use of its bark for writing in ancient India. The tree is distinguished by its white to brownish bark. It is a middle sized tree, with very distinctive bark which peels off in very thin, almost transparent strips. Male flowers are born in catkins which hang in bunches at the end of bare branches, or with young leaves. Female flowers arise in solitary spikes. Leaves are 5-8 cm long, ovate, fine pointed, irregularly saw-toothed, finely hairy when young. Flowering: April-May.
Uses:
Birch bark is a natural plant remedy that has been used for centuries. Its astringent properties make it useful for treating wounds and stopping bleeding, and Ayurveda uses it to treat obesity and other lipid metabolism disorders. Birch bark contains an essential oil called betulin, which is also found in birch trees.
Bhojpatra is the most commonly used herb in Asian times for the treatment of bleeding, wound cleaning, earache, and various psychiatric disorders. During the time of our acharya, its bark was used as paper. Then there were no papers the horoscopes were written on some special types of leaves known as bhojpatra or bhurja Patra. People stored information in a written form on the back of this plant because of this it is also called lekhya Patra which is used for writing.
