What is  Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an evergreen shrub that grows in Asia and Africa. It is commonly used for stress, but there is little evidence for its use as an "adaptogen."

The name ashwagandha means "smell of horse" in Sanskrit. It has been used for centuries in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, as an anti-inflammatory.

Don't confuse ashwagandha with Physalis alkekengi (also known as winter cherry). Both are known as winter cherry. Also don't confuse ashwagandha with American ginseng or eleuthero (also known as Siberian ginseng).
