Firstly, this jyoti represents the immense devotion for Goddess Durga. The hidden message is that of never lose hope even in the worst circumstances- just like a diya lights up. It also shows that devotion will bring the light of knowledge in your life.
The difference between an Akhand Jyot and a normal earthen ‘diya’ is that the former is never let to be extinguished for a specific period of time. Diya with ghee should be kept on the right hand side of Goddess and an oil lit diya should be kept on the left side.
Here are few things that must be avoided if you’re taking the ‘sanklap’ of an Akhand Jyot:
1. Never light an ‘Akhand Jyot’ in a place, closer to toilet or bathroom, or in the vicinity of an inauspicious place.
2. Never keep or leave the ‘Akhand Jyoti’ unsupervised. It should be protect by a glass cover and a devotee must always be present, chanting the sacred mantra jaap in front of it.
. Avoid re-burning of the cotton wick and in case it appears to be going off due to continuous ignition light an extra wick and put it beside the previous burning wick and once the former goes off, remove it and clean the ashes formed around it.
. ‘Jyot’, which is ignited for nine days must not be extinguished, there must always be consistent supply of ghee.
. ‘Akhand Jyot’ should never be kept on the ground. And the family, who establishes an ‘Akhand Jyot’ in their home, must always sleep on level below it better to sleep on ground for nine consecutive days.
