Description
Kali Jeeri, which is also called Kalijiri or Kaali Jeeri, and commonly known as Bitter Cumin, is a plant chiefly grown in India and Southeast Asia. The seeds exhibit a brown hue and have a highly bitter taste, making them difficult to eat raw. These seeds are typically utilized in traditional Ayurvedic preparations.
Kalijiri seeds are effective in treating respiratory issues such as asthma due to their bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory properties. They are also useful for vitiligo as they aid in melanin production.
In Ayurveda, Kalijiri is a vital ingredient in creams and oils designed to treat skin infections thanks to its antibacterial qualities. The seeds' antioxidants help with wound healing by speeding up the contraction of the wound. According to Ayurveda, applying a paste made from Kalijiri seeds mixed with Neem or Coconut oil assists in faster wound healing due to its astringent (Kashaya) nature.
Benefits of Kali Jiri:
Indigestion
Kalijiri helps manage indigestion. From an Ayurvedic perspective, indigestion is a condition of incomplete digestion, mainly caused by an aggravated Kapha leading to weak digestive fire (Agnimandya). Adding Kalijiri to one's diet can boost digestive fire (Agni) and promote easier digestion because of its appetizer (Deepan) property.
Tips for using Kalijiri for indigestion:
-
Combine Kalijiri with Methi seeds and Ajwain.
-
Sieve each ingredient individually to remove impurities like stones.
-
Dry roast Kalijiri for a minute.
-
Similarly, dry roast the other two ingredients.
-
Grind each ingredient separately.
-
Mix the powders to make a blend of Kalijiri, Methi, and Ajwain powder.
-
Consume 1-3 grams (or as advised by a physician) of this mixture with hot water before bed to alleviate indigestion symptoms.
Asthma
In asthma, the primary doshas involved are Vata and Kapha. When vitiated Vata mixes with disturbed Kapha in the lungs, it obstructs the respiratory pathways, causing gasping and difficulty in breathing, known as Swas Roga (Asthma). Kalijiri helps in managing asthma by balancing Vata-Kapha and its hot (Ushna) properties, which help clear obstructions for easier breathing.
Cough
A cough, often occurring with the common cold, is generally considered a Kapha disorder in Ayurveda due to mucus buildup in the respiratory tract. Kalijiri helps manage cough by balancing Kapha and using its hot properties (Ushna), aiding mucus expulsion and providing relief.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
In Ayurveda, UTIs fall under Mutrakcchra, where Mutra means urine and krichra means painful, thus indicating painful urination (dysuria). Kalijiri helps manage UTIs because of its diuretic (Mutral) properties, which increase urine flow and reduce UTI symptoms.
Wound Healing
External injuries can lead to pain, swelling, or bleeding due to an aggravated Vata dosha at the injury site. Kalijiri helps in wound management due to its Vata-balancing and astringent (Kashay) properties, diminishing symptoms like pain or bleeding and promoting faster healing.
Tips for using Kalijiri powder:
-
Take a few Kalijiri seeds.
-
Grind them into powder.
-
Mix this powder with Neem oil or Coconut oil.
-
Apply this paste to the affected area once daily for quick relief from wounds or skin infections.

-
