Botanical NamePlantago ovata
Plant PartSeed husk
Product FormLoose dried psyllium / Isabgol husk
Appearance
Light cream to off-white, lightweight flaky husk with fine fibrous particles. Natural shade and flake size vary slightly by crop; the husk absorbs water and forms a gel-like mass.
Preparation
Always take with adequate liquid because psyllium husk expands after wetting. Do not swallow the dry husk. Follow the pack or qualified professional guidance for quantity and timing.

Isabgol Bhusi, also called Isabagol Bhoonsi or Psyllium Husk, is the outer seed husk of Plantago ovata.

Product Identification
Botanical name: Plantago ovata
Plant part: Seed husk
Product form: Loose dried psyllium husk

Bhusi vs Whole Seeds

This listing is for the separated husk, not whole Isabgol seeds. The husk is lightweight, rich in water-binding fibre and swells rapidly after contact with liquid.

Appearance

Psyllium husk is naturally light cream to off-white with flaky, fibrous particles. Small variations in shade and flake size are normal.

How to Handle Safely

Always use Isabgol Bhusi with adequate liquid because it expands after wetting. Do not swallow the dry husk. People with swallowing difficulty or a known intestinal narrowing should seek medical advice before use.

Storage

Keep tightly sealed in a dry place away from humidity. Use a clean, dry spoon and protect the husk from moisture after opening.

What is Isabgol Bhusi and why does it form a gel in water?

Isabgol Bhusi is the outer husk of Plantago ovata seed. The husk contains mucilage-forming soluble fibre that absorbs many times its own weight in water and develops a soft gel-like texture. This hydration is why the product thickens rapidly once mixed with liquid.

What is the difference between Psyllium Husk and whole Psyllium Seed?

Psyllium Husk is the separated outer seed coat and is the light, flaky, highly water-swelling portion commonly used as a fibre ingredient. Whole Plantago ovata seed contains the husk together with the internal seed. The two forms therefore differ in texture, swelling behaviour and fibre concentration.

How should Isabgol Bhusi be mixed with water?

Add the measured husk to a full glass of water and stir immediately because it thickens quickly. Drink the mixture promptly and follow it with additional water if appropriate. Do not swallow dry psyllium husk by itself because it expands substantially after contact with liquid.

Can Isabgol Bhusi be used every day for fibre?

Many people use psyllium husk as a daily fibre supplement, but quantity and timing matter. It may reduce absorption of some medicines, so keep a gap from regular medication unless a doctor advises otherwise. Long-term digestive complaints should not be managed only with self-supplementation.

Why should prepared Isabgol not be left standing for a long time before drinking?

Psyllium continues absorbing water after mixing, so the drink becomes progressively thicker and more gel-like while standing. Mixing and consuming it promptly makes it easier to swallow and ensures more liquid is available for the husk to hydrate properly.

Why is Isabgol Bhusi popular for constipation and loose stools?

Psyllium husk is a bulk-forming fibre. It can help soften hard stool by holding water, and it can also add bulk to loose stool. It supports bowel regulation, but it is not a substitute for medical care when symptoms are severe, recurrent or accompanied by bleeding, fever or pain.
