Description
Croton Tiglium, commonly referred to as Jamalgota or Purging Croton is a perennial medicinal plant from the Euphorbiaceae family. This evergreen shrub, valued for its strong laxative properties, stimulates intestinal movement. In traditional medicine, it is used to address various conditions including hair loss, digestive issues, intestinal problems, ulcers, headaches, and acne. Due to its purgative nature, it earned the name Purgation Croton, though it is also known for its toxic properties and its seeds are used as waste material. The seeds of Jamalgota resemble those of castor plants. Raw consumption or high doses of Croton seeds and oil can promote blood clotting, and they are traditionally used to alleviate muscle and joint discomfort. The poisonous seeds contain croton and are mixed with cow's milk to treat constipation after detoxification.
Health Advantages of Jaipal:
Jayapal Constipation Reliever:
Ayurveda medicine uses purified kernels of the croton plant extensively for relief from constipation. Mix 20 grams of these kernels with 2.5 grams of Tankan Bhasma, suggests the Ayurvedic texts, to find relief from symptoms of constipation, regulate bowel movements, and improve appetite. Prolonged use of the purified kernels is not advisable, as it may bring about intestinal discomfort and decrease the natural peristalsis.
Jamalgota Aids in Treating Hemorrhoids:
Applying a paste made from Jamalgota root can help heal external, non-bleeding hemorrhoids. This paste, created by mixing fine Croton root powder with buttermilk, works by reducing and drying out inflamed hemorrhoid tissue. Jamalgota's natural pain-relieving properties also provide relief from hemorrhoid discomfort.
Croton Tiglium Seeds Controls Jaundice:
Ayurvedic doctors advise their patients to take the mixture of the outer bark of the Jamalgota, mixed with jaggery, which increases the secretion of bile from the gall and the liver. This is the treatment for jaundice and minimizes the complaint of pale stools.
Jaipal helps in the treatment of skin infections:
Extracts of the Jamalgota have expressed strong antimicrobial activities against fungi and bacteria, which cause skin infections. Traditional medicine has been used in the treatment of diseases such as scabies and carbuncles. However, one must consult an Ayurvedic doctor before its use for the skin problem. It may cause severe irritation in the skin if there is excess usage.
Potential Side Effects of Jayapal: Unpurified Jamalgota seeds can be dangerous and may cause severe irritation and inflammation in the digestive tract:

Nuts and seeds are good sources of protein, healthy fats, fibers, vitamins, and minerals. They help regulate body weight as their fats are not fully absorbed and they regulate food intake. Nuts and seeds contain unsaturated fats and other nutrients that provide protective effects against heart disease and diabetes.
The toxicity of Croton tiglium seeds may be due to the presence of phorbol esters and crotonic acid along with other constituents. These constituents are oil soluble and may be removed by cow milk during the process of Śodhana (purification). Reduction in the level of these constituents after purification decreases the toxicity of Croton tiglium seeds.
