Description
Neem, a part of the mahogany family Meliaceae, is scientifically known as 'Azadirachta indica' and is indigenous to India. In the Sanskrit language, neem is called arista, which translates to perfect, imperishable, and complete. The Latinized name originates from Persian, where ‘Azad’ means ‘free,’ ‘dirakht’ signifies ‘tree,’ and ‘i-Hind’ refers to ‘of Indian origin,’ together meaning ‘the free tree of India.’
This evergreen tree can reach heights between 50 and 120 feet and is notable for thriving in dry regions with minimal rainfall. Its resilience to drought makes it highly suitable for our current global environment.
Revered for its medicinal value since ancient times, the neem tree has been used to treat numerous ailments. Various parts of the tree, including its leaves, seeds, roots, and bark, contain compounds beneficial for both health and beauty. In Ayurveda, the tree symbolizes good health.
Neem is renowned for its anti-aging benefits. Its antioxidant properties shield the skin from harmful UV rays, pollution, and other environmental factors. The vitamins and fatty acids in neem help improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and fine lines, giving a rejuvenated and youthful appearance. Moreover, neem combats fungal infections with its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, thus protecting the skin from diseases.
Neem bark, or chhal, possesses antiseptic and astringent properties that aid in wound healing. Extracts from the bark have antioxidant properties and act as a cooling agent. The bark is also used to treat conditions like malaria, stomach and intestinal ulcers, skin diseases, pain, and fever.
In India, neem twigs have traditionally been used as toothbrushes. Chewing on these twigs fights germs, maintains saliva's alkaline levels, prevents bacteria, treats swollen gums, and whitens teeth. The twig fibers act like bristles, helping to combat plaque.
Neem also acts as an insect repellent. Research indicates that applying neem root or leaf extract to the skin repels black flies, and neem oil cream offers some protection against certain mosquitoes. Neem also aids in healing ulcers; studies suggest that taking neem bark extract orally reduces stomach and intestinal ulcers over ten weeks by decreasing acid production and increasing gastric mucus levels.
For psoriasis, early research shows that oral neem extract for 12 weeks, combined with sun exposure and application of coal tar and salicylic acid creams, can alleviate symptoms.
Neem bark powder promotes skin health by encouraging rejuvenation, optimal moisture levels, and shedding old skin cells. It supports digestive health and metabolism through its soothing properties, helping maintain Pitta levels.
Additionally, aqueous extracts of neem bark inhibit virus entry and attachment to cells, showing potential antiviral activity against Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV).
Neem bark (neem chhal) is used for various health issues, including leprosy, eye disorders, nasal bleeding, intestinal worms, stomach upset, loss of appetite, skin ulcers, cardiovascular diseases, fever, diabetes, gum disease (gingivitis), and liver problems. Neem leaves are also employed for birth control and inducing abortions.
