Description
Known also as Plumed Cockscomb, Kurdu, Celosia Argentea, Lal Murga, and Surwali Beej, Sirwali Seeds (सिरवाली बीज) are a type of annual bloom celebrated for its array of vibrant, fiery hues. The scientific name for Plumed Cockscomb, 'Celosia,' derives from a Greek term meaning "burned," aptly reflecting the plant's intense coloration reminiscent of flames.
These plants, resembling feathery dusters, are naturally self-seeding and proliferate with ease throughout the growing season when nurtured in fertile, well-aerated, and loamy soil. Despite their annual lifecycle, they contribute a burst of color that enhances the garden landscape significantly.
Sirwali Seeds belong to the Amaranthaceous family and originate from the lush tropics of India and Nepal. Known for its brilliantly vivid colors, this plant has earned a reputation as a persistent weed in India and China. In Africa, it serves a practical purpose in managing the growth of the parasitic Striga plant and is included in soap production.
Globally recognized, the Sirwali plant is known in Lagos, Nigeria as Lagos spinach and as Shoko Yokoto among the Yoruba. Recently, its nutritional and substantial medicinal properties have gained attention. It has been found that its ethanolic extract contains beneficial compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, and tannins, lending to its health-promoting features and its potency in treating various ailments.
The use of Sirwali plant parts is widespread in traditional medicine where stems and leaves are fashioned into poultices. Applied to infected wounds, sores, and skin irritations, these poultices, sometimes mixed with honey, serve as soothing compresses for swelling and painful injuries including boils.
Sirwali Seeds alleviate gastrointestinal problems, reduce fever linked to liver complications, enhance vision, and possess antipyretic properties. Additionally, these seeds can be prepared as a decoction or ground to a fine powder for use as anti-diarrheal and aphrodisiac treatments. Applying the juice from these seeds directly into the nose can effectively manage nosebleeds.
