Chana Sattu / Roasted Gram Flour

Chana Sattu is a flour made from roasted Bengal gram/chickpeas (Cicer arietinum). It is also commonly searched as Sattoo, Sathu, roasted chana flour and roasted gram flour.

What is Chana Sattu?

Chana Sattu is flour made from roasted gram or chickpeas. Because the gram is roasted before grinding, it differs from ordinary raw besan or chickpea flour used for cooking batters.

How can Chana Sattu be prepared as a drink?

Whisk it into cool water, milk or buttermilk and flavour it sweet or savoury. Add the powder gradually to reduce lumps and consume the prepared drink fresh rather than leaving it at room temperature for long periods.

Can Chana Sattu be used in foods other than drinks?

Yes. It can be added to paratha fillings, laddoo mixtures, porridge, doughs and savoury snacks. Adjust liquid slowly because roasted flour absorbs moisture differently from wheat flour.

Is Chana Sattu a complete meal replacement?

Not automatically. It provides gram-based protein, carbohydrate and fibre, but a balanced meal may also require vegetables, healthy fats and other foods depending on individual needs.

Is Chana Sattu gluten-free?

Gram itself does not contain gluten, but cross-contact can occur during milling or packing. People with coeliac disease or severe gluten sensitivity should rely on a specifically tested and labelled gluten-free product.

How should Chana Sattu be stored?

Keep it airtight, cool and dry and use a clean dry spoon. Discard it if it develops insects, mould, moisture clumps, rancid smell or an unusual bitter taste.
