Khareti Beej are seeds of Abutilon indicum, commonly called Atibala or Indian Mallow. They are one plant part from a herb in which the root, leaf, flower and seed have all appeared separately in traditional use. A seed-specific formula should therefore use seed material rather than another Atibala plant part.
No. Atibala is commonly identified as Abutilon indicum, while Bala is commonly identified as Sida cordifolia. Both belong to the mallow family and the names are sometimes confused in herbal trade, but they are separate botanical species. Khareti or Atibala Beej should therefore not automatically be substituted with Bala Beej.
They are better regarded as a traditional herbal raw material than as a routine snack seed. Published ethnobotanical literature records Abutilon indicum seeds in traditional preparations, but that does not make them equivalent to common food seeds such as sesame or sunflower. Use should follow the preparation for which the raw herb was specifically obtained.
The seed should be dry and clean and should not contain visible mould, insects, excessive soil, stones or unrelated seed material. Because small herbal seeds can be difficult to authenticate visually, a clear botanical label for Abutilon indicum is more useful than relying only on seed colour.
Keep them tightly sealed, cool and dry and retain the botanical label with the container. Store them separately from culinary seeds to prevent accidental substitution. Discard a batch that becomes mouldy, persistently damp, insect-infested or develops an abnormal smell.
No. Seeds, roots, leaves and whole-plant material are different raw materials even when they come from the same Abutilon indicum plant. Traditional references may specify a particular plant part and preparation method, so the seed should not be substituted automatically for Panchang, root or leaf material.
