In the profound tradition of Rasa Shastra, Abhrak Bhasma (calcined Mica) is known as one of the most versatile and powerful mineral preparations.
The secret to Abhrak Bhasma lies in its "Puta" (the number of times it has been incinerated). While 10 or 100 Puti are common, the Sahasra Puti (1000 times processed) is considered a divine nectar for the lungs and nerves.
HOW TO USE ABHRAK BHASM
1. Understanding the Potency
Not all Abhrak Bhasma is created equal. The efficacy depends on how many times it has been processed:
- Shataputi: Processed 100 times. Standard for most chronic conditions.
- Sahasra-puti: Processed 1,000 times. This is considered "gold standard" for deep rejuvenation (Rasayana) and treating complex, deep-seated tissues.
2. Primary Clinical Indications
Abhrak Bhasma is primarily used to balance Vata and Kapha, though it is generally considered Tridoshic (balancing all three) when used with the right vehicle.
- Respiratory Health (Pranavaha Srotas): Excellent for chronic asthma, bronchitis, and lingering coughs. It helps strengthen the lung tissue.
- Nervous System (Majjavaha Srotas): Used in cases of paralysis, tremors, and general debility. It’s essentially a brain and nerve tonic.
- Reproductive Health: Acts as a Vajikarana (aphrodisiac) and is used to treat infertility or low vitality.
- Metabolic Disorders: Often prescribed for Prameha (diabetes) and its complications.
3. The Art of the Anupana (Vehicle)
In Ayurveda, the substance you take with the Bhasma acts as the "GPS," directing the medicine to the specific tissue.

4. Standard Dosage
Note: Because this is a mineral-based medicine, precision is vital.
- Typical Dose: 125 mg to 250 mg (roughly one to two "pinches").
- Frequency: Once or twice a day, usually after meals.
- Duration: Generally not used for more than 4–6 weeks at a time without a break, unless under strict clinical supervision.
5. Essential Safety & Quality Control
Since we are dealing with mica (a mineral), the Bhasma must be properly incinerated.
- The Floating Test (Varitara): A small amount of the powder should float on water and not sink; this proves the particles are fine enough to be absorbed by the body.
- Contraindications: Avoid use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in children unless specifically directed by a senior Vaidya. High doses or poorly prepared Bhasma can lead to kidney strain.
Benefits of Abhrak Bhasma
Abhrak Bhasma is prized in Rasashastra (Ayurvedic mineralogy) for its multifaceted healing properties.
- Deep Rejuvenation (Rasayana): It slows down the aging process of cells and replenishes the body’s vital essence (Ojas).
- Respiratory Strength: It is highly effective for chronic asthma, bronchitis, and recovering lung capacity after illness.
- Nervous System Tonic: It nourishes the brain and nerves, helping with memory loss, mental fatigue, and even tremors or neuralgia.
- Metabolic Regulation: It helps stabilize blood sugar and supports the pancreas in cases of Prameha (diabetes).
- Vitality & Reproductive Health: Acts as a powerful Vajikarana, improving stamina, libido, and correcting reproductive tissue imbalances.
- Heart Health: Functions as a cardiac tonic, strengthening the heart muscles and improving circulation.
- Bio-Amplifier: It makes every other herb you take with it more "bio-available" and potent.
