What is Black Paan Katha?

Black Paan Katha or black cutch is a concentrated material associated with Acacia catechu and traditionally used in very small quantities in paan preparations. It is not the same as tobacco, areca nut or synthetic food colour.

Is every type of Katha edible?

No. Only material explicitly manufactured, labelled and stored for food use should be considered for paan or culinary use. Industrial, dyeing or craft-grade catechu must not be consumed.

How much Black Katha is normally used in paan?

Only a very thin smear is traditionally used because the material is strongly astringent. Avoid recommending a medicinal dose, and do not assume that more provides greater benefit.

Does Black Katha make paan safe?

No. Adding Katha does not remove the health risks of tobacco, areca nut, slaked lime or other paan ingredients. Tobacco-free and areca-free choices remain important.

What reactions can occur from excessive Katha?

Too much may cause strong dryness, mouth irritation, nausea or digestive discomfort. Stop use if burning, sores, swelling or persistent oral changes occur and seek dental or medical advice.

How should Black Paan Katha be stored?

Keep it sealed, dry and clearly labelled as food grade, away from chemicals and non-food catechu. Use a clean dry utensil and discard material with mould, unusual odour or contamination.
