Description
Gugal, also known across various regions as Commiphora Mukul or Indian Bdellium originates from the small, but mighty Mukul myrrh tree. This natural resin has been revered for its diverse health benefits. Integral to traditional wellness practices, Guggal aids in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and supports joint and skin health.
The main active substance found in Guggul is its oleo-gum-resin, a compound consisting of oil and a yellow or brown liquid extracted from the plant’s stem or bark, reputed for its medicinal properties.
In the practice of Ayurveda, Guggul plays a crucial role in regulating body weight by enhancing metabolism and reducing the presence of Ama (the toxic by-products of incomplete digestion), thanks to its ability to boost the digestive fire.
It further assists in diminishing inflammation, discomfort, and rigidity in the joints for those suffering from both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, attributing to its anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic characteristics.
The application of a Guggul paste, prepared with warm water, directly onto the joints, serves to alleviate joint pain. It's important to note the significant benefit derived from thoroughly chewing Guggul prior to swallowing.
In Ayurvedic practices, Guggulu is commonly prescribed in combination with other herbal treatments, including castor oil or ghee (clarified butter), and can also be boiled with water and additional herbs. Among the well-known formulations containing guggulu are yograj guggulavati, panchamrith loha guggulu, triphala guggulu, sinha guggulavati, and kaishore guggulavayi.
Guggul is recognized for its capacity to bolster immune functions and combat bacterial infections in addition to addressing skin concerns such as wrinkles and acne.
