Harad, commonly referred to as Harade in India, is an herb with numerous Ayurvedic health benefits. It is renowned for its potential to control hair loss and stimulate hair growth, thanks to its rich content of vitamin C, iron, manganese, selenium, and copper, which nourish the scalp. According to Ayurveda texts, Harad possesses several beneficial properties as detailed in this sloka:

हरीतकी प तुवरा परम्। रूक्षोष्णा दीपनी मेथ्या स्वादुपाका रसायनी॥

चक्षुष्या लघुरायुष्या बृंहणी चानुलोमिनी। श्वासकासप्रमेहार्शः कुष्ठशोथोदरक्रिमीन्।

वैस्वर्यग्रहणीरोगविबन्धविषमज्वरान्। गुल्माध्मानतृषाछर्दिहिक्काकण्डूहृदामयान्।।

Harad exhibits Ruksha (dry), Deepan (appetizer), Medhya (intelligence improving), and Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties. Its Chakshuya (beneficial for eyes) and Brahan (health-improving) qualities make it useful for alleviating general weakness and enhancing eye health.

The Vata Anuloma (Vata balancing) property helps alleviate body aches. Furthermore, Harad can mitigate cough and related respiratory issues such as breathlessness, alongside addressing digestive problems due to its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) characteristics.

Harad seed oil promotes gastrointestinal motility, aiding in bowel movements and easing chronic constipation. Consuming Harad powder mixed with water twice daily may enhance the immune system by reducing cellular damage through its antioxidant and immunomodulatory actions.

Applying Harad powder mixed with coconut oil as a paste can aid wound healing due to its astringent properties and combat skin infections by fighting infectious agents. Harad extract applied on the eyelids acts as a nerve tonic to manage certain eye diseases.

Caution: Excessive intake of Harad may cause diarrhea. If you have sensitive skin, it's advisable to use Harad paste mixed with a carrier oil like coconut oil.

Harad Big Yellow is the dried mature fruit of Terminalia chebula, known as Haritaki, Halela Zard or Chebulic Myrobalan. It is one of the three fruits used in Triphala and is highly valued in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani traditions.
Harad is widely searched for digestion and bowel regularity because of its traditional use as a mild digestive and cleansing herb. It should not be used to self-treat chronic constipation, abdominal pain, bleeding, diarrhea or unexplained weight loss.
Big Yellow Harad usually refers to a larger mature yellowish variety, while Black Harad or Bal Harad refers to smaller darker fruits. They are related Terminalia chebula trade forms, but size, maturity, taste and traditional preference may differ.
Good Big Yellow Harad should be dry, firm, naturally yellow-brown, ridged and heavy for its size. Avoid fruits that are moldy, hollow, insect-eaten, artificially polished, excessively blackened or mixed with stones and broken waste.
Night use of Harad is common in traditional practice, but daily use should depend on body constitution, diet and medical condition. People who are pregnant, dehydrated, underweight, diabetic, on medication or have chronic digestive problems should seek professional advice.
Store whole Harad in a dry airtight container away from moisture and insects. Whole fruits are more stable than powder, but they should still be checked for holes, powdery insect residue, fungal smell or dampness before use.
