Traditional Ayurvedic Formulations
Owing to its intense bitterness and potent healing properties, Kutki has been a key ingredient in many traditional Ayurvedic formulations such as Tikta Ghrita (Bitter Ghee), Pancha Tikta Ghrita, Kalmeghasava, Arogyavardhini Gutika, Punarnavadi Kvatha, Triphala Ghrita, and Maha Yogaraj Guggulu. Some herbalists use Kutki as a substitute for Western herbs like Gentian.
Health Benefits of Kutki (Kedar Kadvi):
Liver Health
Kutki is heralded as 'sarva roga niramani' for its potent hepatoprotective and hepatostimulative properties, making it effective against conditions like jaundice. It supports liver function by promoting bile secretion, which helps normalize liver enzyme levels. Additionally, it cleanses and detoxifies the liver, thus enhancing its overall functioning.
-
Usage: Take ½ tsp of Kutki with 1 tbsp of aloe vera juice and 1 tsp of honey, three times daily with meals to boost liver health.
Weight Loss
Rich in flavonoids, the root of Kutki (Kedar kadvi) aids in weight loss. Its high fiber and nutrient content help curb sudden hunger pangs and prevent overeating. It also reduces LDL (bad cholesterol) in the body, thereby aiding in weight management and improving metabolism.
Heart Health
(Kedar kadvi) Kutki is a powerful cardio-protective herb that is essential for treating various heart conditions. Its antioxidants strengthen the heart muscles, prevent lipid buildup, and reduce the risk of heart attacks, blocks, blood clots, and atherosclerosis. It also helps lower blood cholesterol levels, dilate blood vessels and regulate blood flow, thus aiding in managing high blood pressure.
Respiratory Health
Known for its anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and anti-asthmatic properties, Kutki is an effective remedy for respiratory issues such as common cold, sore throat, cough, and flu. It helps thin and loosen mucus in the chest and nasal cavities, facilitating easier breathing and alleviating symptoms of bronchitis and asthma.
-
Usage: Mix ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp ginger, ¼ tsp of Kutki, and 1 tsp raw honey in ¼ cup of warm water, and consume thrice daily after meals to relieve asthma and allergies.
Ulcer Treatment
The anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties of Kedar kadvi and rhizome are valuable for treating ulcers such as ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcers, and canker sores. Its bioactive components aid in the healing of mouth and gastric ulcers and accelerate the healing process of the inflamed mucosal layer.
Infection Prevention
Kutki's biochemical compounds have been used since ancient times to combat germs and protect against various infections. Due to its antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, it helps eliminate bacteria and germs from the body, reduces fever, and alleviates general weakness and fatigue.
Digestive Health
Kutki's carminative and digestive properties make it a comprehensive solution for digestive issues. It reduces gas formation in the alimentary canal, thereby alleviating flatulence, bloating, constipation, and abdominal distension. Its antacid property prevents excessive acid formation in the stomach, thus treating indigestion, ulcer, and gastritis while promoting nutrient absorption.
Diabetes Management
Kutki possesses hypoglycaemic properties which help in regulating blood sugar levels. It stimulates insulin production from β-pancreatic cells and impedes the breakdown of starch into glucose, thereby maintaining lower blood glucose levels.
-
Usage: Consume ½ tsp of Kutki with ½ tsp of turmeric mixed in ¼ cup of warm water, thrice daily to control blood sugar levels.
Arthritis Relief
Kutki's anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties offer relief from arthritis pain and inflammation. It is effective against Rheumatoid arthritis (Amavata in Ayurveda), which is linked to Vata dosha imbalances and Ama accumulation in the joints.
-
Usage: Create a mixture of ¼ tsp Kutki, ½ tsp Ginger, and 1 tsp Castor Oil, and consume it with warm water before bed to alleviate arthritic pain.
Skin Health
The antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties of Kutki help in purifying the blood and managing skin disorders. It protects the skin from oxidative damage due to UVA and UVB rays and mitigates signs of aging like wrinkles, blemishes, and fine lines. It also treats skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, scabies, and other infections.
-
Usage: Take 1 tsp of Tikta Ghrita melted in ½ cup hot water, mixed with ¼ tsp Kutki powder and ¼ tsp turmeric, on an empty stomach in the morning for clear and radiant skin.
Vitiligo Management
Kutki, loaded with antipyretic properties and antioxidants, can soothe and heal the skin. It helps prevent the spread of Vitiligo, a condition where the skin loses its color due to the non-functioning of pigment-producing cells.
-
Usage: Apply Kutki regularly to affected areas to prevent the spread of Vitiligo, although it should be noted that it cannot cure the condition.
