What is Amber (Resin)?
Amber, known as Kaharwa in Ayurveda and Unani medicine, is the fossilized resin of ancient coniferous trees. Over millions of years, this organic matter transforms into a potent substance rich in succinic acid. In Ayurvedic terms, it possesses Kashaya (astringent) and Sheeta (cooling) properties. It is primarily used to balance Pitta (fire) and Vata (air) doshas, making it an exceptional remedy for conditions involving excess heat, bleeding, or nervous exhaustion.
Ayurvedic Benefits of Amber Resin
1. Rakta-Stambhak (Control of Bleeding)
Amber is highly regarded for its ability to stop bleeding. In traditional practice, it is used to manage "Rakta-Pitta" (bleeding disorders), including epistaxis (nosebleeds), heavy menstrual flow, and bleeding gums. Its astringent nature helps in constricting blood vessels and promoting healing.
2. Manas-Shanti (Mental Calmness & Grounding)
The succinic acid in Amber resin is known for its calming effect on the nervous system. As a "Vata-Hara" substance, it helps reduce anxiety, palpitations, and stress. Wearing or diffusing Amber is believed to ground the energy and provide emotional stability.
3. Shothahara (Anti-Inflammatory Properties)
Amber resin acts as a natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent. It is often used to relieve pain associated with teething in infants (when used externally) and to reduce localized swelling or joint pain caused by aggravated Pitta.
4. Hridya (Heart & Respiratory Tonic)
In certain formulations, Amber is used as a heart tonic to stabilize the pulse. It also helps in clearing the "Pranavaha Srotas" (respiratory channels), assisting in the management of chronic cough and chest congestion by balancing Kapha.
How to Use Amber Resin Safely
Aromatic Diffusion for Stress
Place a small piece of Amber Resin on a charcoal incense burner. The warm, woody, and sweet aroma acts as a "Medhya" (brain tonic), helping to clear mental fog and induce a state of deep relaxation during meditation.
Topical Application for Pain
Amber resin can be infused into a base oil like Sesame Oil. Massaging this infused oil onto the chest can help relieve respiratory congestion, or applying it to joints can help soothe Vata-related aches and stiffness.
Traditional External Use
Amber is often worn as a necklace or bracelet. The warmth of the skin triggers the release of trace amounts of succinic acid, which is absorbed into the bloodstream to provide a continuous, mild anti-inflammatory and calming effect.
Oral Health Support
In Unani and Ayurvedic traditions, purified Kaharwa (Amber) Pishti is used under expert guidance to treat bleeding gums and oral ulcers due to its cooling and astringent (Stambhak) action.
