Commonly referred to as "Gale Of The Wind," Phyllanthus niruri, or bhumi amla, is a crucial component in the traditional Ayurvedic mix, Chyawanprash. This plant contributes significantly to enhancing immune function, with its leaves, roots, and other parts offering a range of therapeutic benefits.
The benefits derived from this plant are extensive, ranging from hepatoprotective and antioxidant abilities to antiviral properties, which not only promote liver health but also aid in digestion, treat kidney disorders, improve skin health, and support overall well-being.
Bhumi amla plays a vital role in Ayurvedic medicine, particularly in treating liver ailments and various other health conditions. It thrives in the tropical climates of India, China, and the islands of North and Central America, commonly growing to a modest height of 50-70 cm.
The plant features herbaceous branches with small, narrow, elliptical leaves, which are alternately arranged on smooth, light-green stems. It blossoms into pale green flowers with red streaks, eventually fruiting into soft, capsule-like fruits filled with tiny seeds.
The whole plant, including the leaves, is utilized in making therapeutic tonics, pastes, and powders. Locally in India, bhumi amla is known by several names such as Jangli amlai and Bhumi amla in Hindi, Tamalaki and Bahupatra in Sanskrit, and various other regional names. In English, it is also known as stonebreaker and seed-under-leaf.
Benefits and Therapeutic Applications of Bhumi Amla:
Corrects Liver Disorders: Bhumi amla is endowed with powerful hepatoprotective properties that improve liver functionality and repair damaged liver cells and tissues. This herb is beneficial for conditions such as cirrhosis, gallstones, liver tissue damage, and even slows liver cancer progression due to its robust anti-inflammatory properties.
Enhances Respiratory Health: With strong anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and anti-asthmatic properties, bhumi amla effectively addresses various respiratory conditions. It is widely used to alleviate symptoms of the common cold, sore throat, coughs, and flu, helping to clear mucus from the chest and nasal passages, thus facilitating easier breathing.
Promotes Kidney Health: Thanks to its diuretic characteristics, bhumi amla helps eliminate excess salts, acids, and fluids from the body, thereby protecting kidney health and maintaining electrolyte balance. Its astringent and cooling effects are also applied in treating urinary conditions, such as painful urination or urinary incontinence, thus preventing serious kidney issues.
Manages Wounds and Ulcers: Bhumi amla's anti-inflammatory and pain-relief properties are crucial in managing various ulcers and accelerating wound healing while promoting tissue regeneration. Its astringent properties also help reduce swelling.
Reduces Stress and Aids in Weight Management: As a sedative, the plant's extracts reduce stress and anxiety symptoms, while also enhancing mood. Furthermore, its high flavonoid content supports weight loss efforts by curbing sudden hunger pangs and boosting metabolism.
Offers Joint Pain Relief: Rich in analgesic properties, bhumi amla alleviates pain and inflammation due to arthritis and similar conditions. It is especially effective in treating Rheumatoid arthritis, known in Ayurveda as Amavata.
Supports Digestive Health: Bhumi amla's mild carminative effects reduce gas formation, while its antacid properties prevent excessive stomach acid production, improving nutrient absorption and overall digestive health.
Boosts Mood and Cognitive Functions: Traditionally used to enhance brain function, the antioxidants in bhumi amla improve memory, focus, and cognitive abilities, and provide relief in neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s.
Treats Skin Conditions: Its antioxidants and anti-microbial properties effectively treat skin infections and improve complexion by unclogging pores and reducing ageing signs.
Dosage and Usage: The appropriate therapeutic dose of bhumi amla varies based on individual factors and should be prescribed by a certified Ayurvedic practitioner. The general recommendation for adults is to consume ½ - 1 teaspoon of the powder mixed with water after meals.
