Bhoot Keshi (Jadd)—scientifically known as Selinum vaginatum (also referred to as Milk Parsley or Bhut-Kesari)
The name "Bhoot Keshi" literally translates to "ghostly hair" (Bhoot = ghost/spirit, Keshi = hair), referring to the fibrous, hair-like covering on its roots. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a powerful Medhya (brain tonic) and Sanjnasthapana (restorer of consciousness) herb, often used as a more potent or alternative substitute for Jatamansi.
Ayurvedic Benefits Of Bhoot Keshi (Jadd)
1. Nervine & Mental Wellness (Manas Rog)
- Mental Calmness: It acts as a potent Nervine Sedative. It is traditionally used to treat "Unmada" (insanity/mental disorders) and "Apasmara" (epilepsy or seizures).
- Stress & Insomnia: It has a natural cooling effect on the brain, helping to reduce anxiety, hysteria, and chronic sleep disorders by calming the hyper-excitability of the nervous system.
- Neuroprotective: Rich in antioxidants like valerenic acid and coumarins, it helps protect brain cells from oxidative stress and age-related decline.
2. Cardiovascular & Blood Pressure Support
- Hypotensive Action: Bhoot Keshi is known for its ability to naturally lower high blood pressure (Rakta-chap). It helps relax the blood vessels and reduce the heart's workload.
3. Digestive & Metabolic Health
- Abdominal Functions: It possesses Deepana (appetizer) and Pachana (digestive) properties, helping to maintain regular bowel movements and reduce abdominal bloating or gas.
- Weight Management: Traditionally used in formulations that support healthy metabolism and weight control.
4. Pain & Inflammation
- Analgesic (Pain Relief): The root is often used to manage localized pain, especially toothaches and joint pain. Its anti-inflammatory nature helps reduce swelling and redness.

Ayurvedic Consultant’s Notes & Precautions
- Substitution Note: Bhoot Keshi is very similar to Jatamansi in appearance and aroma. However, Bhoot Keshi is often considered "hotter" or more stimulating for the nerves.
- The "Spirit" Myth: Traditionally, the plant was kept in homes to ward off "evil spirits" or negative energies. In modern terms, this refers to its ability to clear the "psychic atmosphere" and reduce mental heavy-heartedness.
- Dosage Warning: Because of its potent sedative and hypotensive (BP lowering) properties, do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Contraindications: * Avoid if you already have very low blood pressure.
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless prescribed.
- Quality: Authenticity is key with this herb. IndianJadiBooti provides premium, hand-selected roots that are clean, sorted, and free from the adulteration common with this specific species.
Note: As this herb affects the nervous system and blood pressure, always consult your physician before starting it, especially if you are on psychiatric or BP medications.
