Description
Damiana is a little shrub from the Turneraceae family. It’s the dried leaves of this plant that hold medicinal properties. Damiana is scientifically known as Turnera diffusa and comes from the Turneraceae family. Now, it shares characteristics with other species of the group. But its chemical makeup gives it unique health benefits. Damiana is a low-growing shrub. Its leaves are yellow-brown and have a sweet smell. When these leaves dry, they’re used for medicinal purposes. The plant is typically seen in the warm climates of southern Texas, Mexico, Central America, etc. It can grow in varied conditions, from dry, rocky hillsides to sandy coastal regions.
Health benefits of Damiana leaves:
Male Sexual Health:
Especially indicated for alleviating problems of achieving and maintaining erections, Damiana also works to relieve stress and anxiety related to fears of inadequate sexual performance. Studies have shown that consuming the plant works to slow down the digestive tract and instead rushes oxygen to genital areas. This helps men to achieve erection much more easily and maintain it for longer periods. Yet another study claims that the use of Damiana leads to greater sensitivity in the erogenous zones, especially the genitals, which in turn may help men experience greater sexual pleasure.
Female Sexual Health:
Damiana has a very different effect on the female reproductive system in comparison to men. Traditional use shows that the herb has been used as an emmenagogue (increases blood circulation and contraction to bring on periods) and as an aid during menopause. Damiana increases testosterone and possibly decreases estrogen in women, making it an herb suitable only for women with a hormone imbalance.
Antidepressant:
One of the active constituents of this herb is thymol, and it is this compound that is responsible for Damiana’s life-enhancing and stimulating effect on the mind and body. Many herbalists prescribe Damiana for mild to moderate depression, anxiety, and nervous exhaustion. Its stimulating and restorative properties make it a valuable herb for anxiety and depression occurring together, as can often happen as a result of long-term stress.
Digestive Health:
This versatile herb will promote digestive health by facilitating the breakdown of fats and sugars in the digestive system. This mechanism is beneficial as it increases the body’s nutrient absorption rate, thus ensuring the body receives the most nutrients found in the food we eat. Damiana also encourages the cleansing of the gastrointestinal tract, forcing the body to eliminate harmful chemicals and toxins that would normally hinder the digestion process. This natural herb can also be used to treat dyspepsia, or impaired digestion, as it actively slows down the digestive process.
In India, Damiana leaves (Turnera diffusa) are known by different names depending on the region:
Hindi: Damiana Patta
Sanskrit: Damiana
Tamil: Damiana Ilai
Telugu: Damiana Chettu
Kannada: Damiana
Malayalam: Damiana Ilak
Other Names: Damiana Leaves (Tea Cut Format), Turnera Diffusa, Damyana

FAQ
Historically, Damiana leaf tea has been used as an aphrodisiac to increase sexual desire. It is also used to address various health issues, including headaches, bedwetting, depression, a nervous stomach, and constipation. Additionally, Damiana tea is believed to boost and maintain mental and physical stamina.
Damiana tea is generally safe for most people, but it may cause side effects such as diarrhea, headaches, insomnia, or hallucinations. Very high doses can potentially lead to convulsions.
Yes, Damiana can be taken daily. A typical dosage is up to three cups (750 ml) of tea per day. For tincture form, 1/2–3/4 teaspoon (2–3 ml) three times daily is recommended. Tablets or capsules (400–800 mg three times per day) are also commonly used. Damiana is often used in combination with other herbs.
