IndianJadiBooti Mullein Leaves - Verbascum Thapsus
Mullein, scientifically known as Verbascum thapsus, is a flowering plant that has long been utilised in herbal medicine. It originated in Europe and Western Asia, but it is now found around the world, including the United States and Canada. New Zealand has it as well. It grows well in a wide range of habitats, including meadows, chapparal, deciduous forests, and evergreen forests. Because it grows well in rocky soil, it may be found as a weed in gravel pits or by the side of the road.
It is a biennial plant, meaning it has two growing seasons. It develops a swarm of fuzzy leaves during its first season. The plant generates a tall stalk from the top the second year.
Mullein flowers, leaves, and roots are used by herbal medicine practitioners for a variety of purposes, but more research is needed to confirm their efficacy and safety from a scientific standpoint.
Health Advantages
Mullein can be taken as a supplement, but it is most typically drunk as a tea, which is made by steeping plant components in hot water to extract some of the plant's nutrients and advantages.
Assist with Breathing Difficulties
Mullein may be recommended by herbal medicine professionals, naturopaths, and other types of health practitioners for:
- Cough
- Asthma
- common cold
- COPD
- Bronchitis
Mullein is an expectorant, which means it helps the body evacuate excess mucus, usually by making coughs more productive in order to bring out mucus that has accumulated in the chest or neck. It also acts as a demulcent. Demulcents, according to research, form a calming anti-inflammatory covering over mucous membranes. Demulcents have a higher mucilage content than other plants.
All plants produce a small amount of this sticky material, which soothes the mucous membranes. Both of these properties make it beneficial for relieving irritation of the lungs, throat, and bronchial airways, which can contribute to difficulties breathing.
Combating Virus Infections
Scientists exploring medicinal herbs in test tubes have been excited to discover that mullein may have potent antiviral properties. According to one study, it was especially effective against the influenza virus. Others have hypothesised that it could be useful in combating a herpes virus strain. However, because they were both test-tube trials, more study is required to ensure its usefulness in humans.
Ear Infection Treatment
Mullein has antibacterial characteristics, thus it may be effective in treating middle ear infections in children, according to preliminary study. Instead of tea, ear drops containing mullein, St. John's Wort, and garlic in oil or glycerin are used. However, further research is needed to determine the best strategy to treat ear infections with mullein.
Nutrition
Mullein is commonly used to make tea. Most tea contains only 2 calories and 1 gramme of carbs per cup. Adding milk, lemon, or sugar, on the other hand, alters the nutritious profile. One teaspoon of sugar, for example, contains 16 calories and 4 grammes of carbohydrates.
