What is Molsari (Flower)?

Molsari (Mimusops elengi), widely known as Bakul or Spanish Cherry, is an evergreen tree whose flowers carry a distinct, intoxicating fragrance that persists even after they are dried. In Ayurveda, Molsari flowers are recognized for their Kashaya (astringent) and Tikta (bitter) tastes. They are premier herbs for balancing Pitta (fire) and Kapha (mucus) doshas. Traditionally known as "Sthirapuspa" (the flower that remains firm), they are symbolically and medicinally linked to stability and strength.

Ayurvedic Benefits of Molsari Flower

1. Mukha Swasthya (Elite Oral Care)

Molsari is arguably the finest Ayurvedic herb for dental health. The flowers contain natural tannins that act as powerful astringents, helping to tighten loose teeth and strengthen spongy or bleeding gums. They are a traditional remedy for pyorrhea and gingivitis.

2. Hridya & Medhya (Heart and Brain Tonic)

The dried flowers are used as a "Hridya" (cardiac tonic) to strengthen the heart muscles. Furthermore, the aroma and essence of Molsari are considered "Medhya," meaning they help calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and alleviate persistent headaches or mental fatigue.

3. Stri-Roga (Women's Health Support)

Due to its astringent (Stambhana) properties, Molsari flower decoctions are traditionally used to manage excessive menstrual bleeding and leucorrhea. It helps in toning the uterine muscles and balancing internal heat.

4. Rakta-Prasidana (Skin and Blood Purifier)

When used in skin formulations, Molsari helps cool the blood and reduce inflammatory skin conditions. It helps clear toxins and provides a natural, healthy glow to the complexion by pacifying the Bhrajaka Pitta.

How to Use Molsari Flower Safely

Strengthening Mouth Rinse

Boil 4–5 dried Molsari Flowers in water to create a decoction. Use this lukewarm liquid as a gargle twice daily. This ritual is highly effective for tightening loose teeth and eliminating bad breath (Mukh-Durgandha).

Relaxing Herbal Tea

Steep a few dried flowers in hot water for 5 minutes. This fragrant tea acts as a mild sedative and heart tonic, helping to reduce stress and blood pressure after a long day.

Natural Snuff (Nasya) for Headaches

In traditional practices, the powder of dried flowers is used as a nasal treatment (Nasya) to relieve chronic headaches and sinusitis. (Note: This should only be done under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner.)

Cooling Face Pack

Grind the dried flowers into a fine powder and mix with Rose Water. Apply this to the face to soothe Pitta-induced redness and heat, leaving the skin feeling firm and refreshed.

  • Dry Spanish cherry is a lovely green small tree of the Indian subcontinent. With its small shiny, thick, narrow, pointed leaves, straight trunk and spreading branches, it is a prized oranamental specimen because it provides a dense shade and during the months from March to July fills the night air with the delicious heady aroma of its tiny cream colored flowers.

Flowers are small, star-shaped, yellowish white in color, with a crown rising from the center.
