What is Murva (Mool)?
Murva Mool is the dried root of a sturdy climbing shrub known for its incredible tensile strength—traditionally used to make bowstrings. In Ayurveda, its strength translates into its medicinal action: it is Tikta (bitter) and Madhura (sweet) in taste, with a Ushna Virya (warming potency). It is one of the few herbs specifically mentioned in the Charaka Samhita for its ability to purify breast milk and cleanse the blood of Pittaja (heat-based) impurities.
Ayurvedic Benefits of Murva Mool
1. Raktashodhaka (Superior Blood Purification)
Murva is primarily used to detoxify the blood. By removing Ama (metabolic waste) and excess Pitta from the bloodstream, it helps in managing chronic skin conditions, itching, and inflammatory disorders, promoting a natural and healthy glow from within.
2. Jwarahara (Management of Chronic Fevers)
This herb is traditionally used to manage Visham-Jwara (recurring or chronic fevers). Its bitter properties help regulate body temperature and support the liver in processing the internal heat that often lingers after seasonal viral infections.
3. Prameha-Hara (Metabolic & Sugar Support)
In the Ayurvedic tradition, Murva is utilized to support healthy urinary functions and metabolic balance. It helps in drying up excess "Kleda" (moisture/stickiness) in the body, which is beneficial for those managing blood sugar levels and weight.
4. Tridosha Balance (Pitta & Kapha Focus)
While Murva has a warming effect, its bitter taste is excellent for pacifying an aggravated Pitta and Kapha. It clears congestion in the digestive tract and improves the quality of Rasa Dhatu (the first tissue layer), ensuring better nutrient distribution.
How to Use Murva Mool
Traditional Decoction (Kwath)
Boil 3–5 grams of Murva Mool in 2 cups of water until it reduces to half a cup. Strain and drink this warm decoction once or twice a day. This is the most effective way to absorb its blood-purifying alkaloids.
Herbal Paste for Skin
For localized skin concerns or itching, the root can be ground into a fine paste with a little water and applied topically. This helps draw out heat and soothe the affected area externally.
Powder (Churna) Consumption
If using the powdered form, a dose of 1–2 grams can be taken with warm water or honey after meals. Honey acts as a Yogavahi (catalyst), helping the bitter herb move more easily through the body's channels.

Safety Guidelines
Pregnancy & Nursing: As Murva has "Sthanyashodhana" (milk-cleansing) properties, it should only be used by nursing mothers under the direct supervision of an Ayurvedic physician.
Pitta Sensitivity: Due to its Ushna (warming) nature, avoid excessive doses if you have active stomach ulcers or extreme acidity.
Storage: Keep the roots or powder in an airtight glass container away from moisture to maintain their Prana (medicinal potency).
