Somlata (Ephedra gerardiana) is a rare, resilient medicinal shrub native to the high-altitude, cold deserts of the Himalayas. In the Ayurvedic tradition, it is revered as a "Pranavaha Srotas" herb—a master restorer of the respiratory channels.
The Power of the Panchang
In Ayurveda, Panchang refers to the "five parts" of the plant: Roots, Stems, Leaves, Flowers, and Fruits. Utilizing the full Panchang is a holistic approach that ensures the Prana (life force) of the entire organism is captured.
While modern science might isolate a single alkaloid (like ephedrine), Ayurveda uses the Panchang to provide a balanced therapeutic effect. The secondary metabolites found in the roots and fruits act as natural "buffers," modulating the intensity of the active stimulants in the stems, thereby reducing side effects and enhancing biocompatibility.
How to Use Somlata (Panchang)
Because Somlata is quite potent, it is rarely used alone. It is typically processed into a fine powder (Churna) or a decoction (Kadha).
- As a Decoction (Kadha): Boil 2–3 grams of the Panchang powder in 2 cups of water until it reduces to half a cup. Strain and drink warm.
- With Honey: For respiratory issues, a small pinch (approx. 500mg to 1g) of the powder is often mixed with raw honey to soothe the throat.
- In Formulations: You will often find it as a key ingredient in traditional medicines like Soma Asava.
Consultant’s Note: Due to its stimulating nature, Somlata should be taken in the morning or afternoon. Taking it late at night may interfere with your sleep.
