In Ayurveda, cherries—known by some as Gilaas—are a delightful addition to the diet, especially when dried. Dried cherries are essentially a concentrated form of "Prana" (life force) and heat. While many fruits are cooling, cherries are unique because they carry a heating energy that can be very therapeutic when used correctly.
How to Use Dried Cherries
1. The "Deep Sleep" Elixir
- Method: Simmer 5–7 dried cherries in a cup of warm milk (cow or almond) with a pinch of Nutmeg (Jaiphal).
- When: Drink this 30–60 minutes before bed.
- Why: Nutmeg and cherry work synergistically to ground the nervous system and induce heavy, restful sleep.
2. The Vata-Balancing Snack
- Method: Soak dried cherries in water for 2–3 hours before eating.
- Why: Drying makes the fruit "Ruksha" (dry). Soaking them restores "Jala" (water element), making them easier on the colon and preventing constipation.
3. The Joint-Cleaning Tea
- Method: Boil dried cherries with a small piece of Fresh Ginger.
- Why: The ginger helps digest the "Guru" (heaviness) of the cherry and moves the anti-inflammatory properties into the joints faster.
The Benefits Of Cherries
1. Nidra Janana (Sleep Induction)
Cherries are one of the few natural sources of melatonin. In Ayurveda, we use them to calm the Tarpaka Kapha (the fluid that nourishes the brain), making them a premier remedy for Vata-type insomnia (where the mind is racing at night).
2. Shothahara (Joint & Gout Relief)
Dried cherries are famous for reducing Uric Acid. They help clear the "Ama" (toxins) that settle in the joints, particularly in cases of Vata-Rakta (Gout).
3. Rakta Vardhaka (Blood Tonic)
Rich in iron and "sour energy," they help build the Rakta Dhatu (red blood cells) and improve circulation, warming up those who always feel cold.
4. Hridya (Heart Tonic)
The sweet and sour combination is considered "Hridya" in Ayurveda—pleasing and strengthening to the physical and emotional heart.
