Seed Cleansing or Purification (SHODHANA) Method for JamalGhota

Ayurvedic practice advocates for the cleansing or purification (SHODHANA) of Croton Tiglium (Jamalgota) seeds before their therapeutic use. This process aims to diminish the seed's irritating properties. The Jamalgota purification method involves the following steps:

1. Immerse croton seeds in water overnight.

2. Peel off the outer layer of the croton seeds.

4. Wrap the kernels in a cotton cloth to create a pouch (POTTALI) for steaming (SVEDANA).

5. In a stainless steel container (or ayurvedic DOLA YANTRA), bring cow's milk to a boil to generate steam.

6. Suspend the cotton pouch containing croton seeds above the milk container, then submerge it in the milk. Allow the heat from the milk to steam the seeds for 3 hours.

7. After steaming, remove the seeds from the cloth and rinse with warm water.

8. To further reduce the irritant effect, press the kernels between two absorbent papers to extract residual croton oil.

9. Dry the kernels in sunlight. Store the dried croton kernels in a glass or earthen container.

10. To mitigate side effects, Ayurvedic texts suggest processing (BHAVANA) the croton kernels with lime juice three times.
