Amar bel, often referred to as the "immortal vine," is a remarkable parasitic plant belonging to the Morning glory family. It proliferates rapidly over host plants (or other supports), entwining its stems, which has earned it the nickname "Devil's Hair." This plant lacks both leaves and roots.

Initially, the starting plant has some roots, but within a few days of sprouting, it needs to find a host to survive, or it will perish. Once established on a host, it derives nutrients as a stem parasite, causing its own roots to wither.

The twining stem forms haustoria, root-like structures that penetrate the host stem to extract water and nourishment. The flowers are small, white, bell-shaped, and possess a fleshy calyx, attaching directly to the stem nodes.

The Dodder plant is a vigorous and destructive vine that often overwhelms and kills its host. Additionally, it can transmit various virus diseases such as Citrus mosaic and Purple Blotch to field crops and trees. Dodder seeds can stay dormant for up to five years, making its control a significant concern for agriculture and forestry.

Benefits of Amar Bel:

  • Enhances Hair Health: The sap extracted from the stem prevents hair fall and dandruff and can be used as a hair conditioner and shampoo. It is an effective remedy for baldness.

  • Aids Digestive Health: It treats various digestive ailments, reduces swelling, and inflammation. It can also act as a laxative and expel worms. The plant is beneficial for flatulence, belching, constipation, and indigestion.

  • Supports Liver Health: It aids in liver detoxification, thereby enhancing liver function.

  • Manages Piles: In cases of piles, it helps to heal and control bleeding.

  • Wound Healing: Applied locally, it soothes and heals wounds, rashes, and allergies.

  • Affects Fertility: It is used in regulating both male and female fertility.

  • Purifies Blood: The plant is useful for managing acidity, dysuria, urinary infections, eye and skin disorders, and joint and arthritis pain. It assists in wound healing, liver detoxification, and acts as a blood purifier.

Other Traditional Uses:

Amar bel is also used to treat diarrhea, liver problems, constipation, and inflammation. It serves as a purgative, anthelmintic, antifertility, and carminative agent. It is employed in managing hair fall, wound healing, gas, itching, and both bleeding and non-bleeding piles.

Amar Bel, also known as Akash Bel or Cuscuta reflexa, is a naturally occurring parasitic herb used in Ayurveda. In its raw and wholesome form, it is valued for its Rasayana (rejuvenating), Keshya (hair-supporting), and detox-supporting properties. It is traditionally believed to help balance Vata and Pitta doshas.
Amar Bel, also called Akash Bel, Dodder, or Cuscuta Reflexa, is a leafless parasitic vine that grows over host plants. In Indian herbal tradition it is recognized as a distinctive yellowish twining plant used in selected classical and folk preparations.
Amar Bel is called Akash Bel because the vine often appears to hang and spread over other plants without obvious roots in the soil. The English name Dodder refers to Cuscuta species, a group of parasitic vines that obtain nutrition from host plants.
Amar Bel is traditionally mentioned in herbal systems for hair, skin, liver, and general wellness formulations. These uses are based on traditional knowledge and early research, not a guarantee of results. Use should be guided by an experienced practitioner.
Genuine dried Amar Bel usually appears as thin, tangled, thread-like vine pieces with a yellowish to pale brown color. It should be clean, dry, and free from excess host plant debris, insects, mold, or artificial coloring.
Amar Bel should not be consumed randomly or in large quantities. Because it is a potent traditional herb and may vary depending on host plant and harvesting conditions, internal use should follow qualified advice and proper formulation guidance.
Store Amar Bel in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Since the dried vine is lightweight and absorbent, keep it away from damp areas, strong odors, and insects.
