Amar bel, often referred to as the "immortal vine," is a remarkable parasitic plant belonging to the Morning glory family. It proliferates rapidly over host plants (or other supports), entwining its stems, which has earned it the nickname "Devil's Hair." This plant lacks both leaves and roots.
Initially, the starting plant has some roots, but within a few days of sprouting, it needs to find a host to survive, or it will perish. Once established on a host, it derives nutrients as a stem parasite, causing its own roots to wither.
The twining stem forms haustoria, root-like structures that penetrate the host stem to extract water and nourishment. The flowers are small, white, bell-shaped, and possess a fleshy calyx, attaching directly to the stem nodes.
The Dodder plant is a vigorous and destructive vine that often overwhelms and kills its host. Additionally, it can transmit various virus diseases such as Citrus mosaic and Purple Blotch to field crops and trees. Dodder seeds can stay dormant for up to five years, making its control a significant concern for agriculture and forestry.
Benefits of Amar Bel:
-
Enhances Hair Health: The sap extracted from the stem prevents hair fall and dandruff and can be used as a hair conditioner and shampoo. It is an effective remedy for baldness.
-
Aids Digestive Health: It treats various digestive ailments, reduces swelling, and inflammation. It can also act as a laxative and expel worms. The plant is beneficial for flatulence, belching, constipation, and indigestion.
-
Supports Liver Health: It aids in liver detoxification, thereby enhancing liver function.
-
Manages Piles: In cases of piles, it helps to heal and control bleeding.
-

Other Traditional Uses:
Amar bel is also used to treat diarrhea, liver problems, constipation, and inflammation. It serves as a purgative, anthelmintic, antifertility, and carminative agent. It is employed in managing hair fall, wound healing, gas, itching, and both bleeding and non-bleeding piles.
