Tejpatta also known as Bay Leaf is made from the dried leaves of the Cinnamomum tamala plant. It is a member of the Lauraceae family and the genus Cinnamomum, which contains approximately 270 species of plants native to Asia and Australia. 

Tejpatta, also known as Indian bay leaf, is a small evergreen or perennial tree that grows all year and bears fruit every year of its life. The tree can reach a height of 12 meters and has leaves that are 12-20 cm long and 5-8 cm wide in the centre, with three long nerves running from the base to the apex of the leaf.

Where is Tejpatta Found?

The Indian Bay leaf grows wild in the North-Western Himalayas, Sikkim, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, tropical and subtropical Asia, South Asia, the Pacific region, and Australia. It is used as a spice in a variety of cuisines, particularly northern Indian cuisine, and has an aromatic odour and taste.
