What is Jowar (Sorghum)?
Jowar is an ancient gluten-free millet that has been a staple of the Indian diet for centuries. In Ayurvedic texts, it is described as having Madhura (sweet) and Kashaya (astringent) tastes with a Sheeta Virya (cooling potency). Unlike wheat, which can be heavy and mucus-forming, Jowar is Ruksha (dry) and Laghu (light), making it the ideal grain for balancing Kapha and Pitta doshas.
Benefits of Jowar
1. Lekhana (Scraping Excess Fat)
Due to its high fiber content and "Ruksha" (dry) quality, Jowar acts as a natural Lekhana agent. it helps in "scraping" away excess fat and Ama (metabolic toxins) from the body's channels, supporting healthy weight management and clearing arterial congestion.
2. Prameha-Hara (Diabetes & Blood Sugar Management)
Jowar is a "Pathya" (wholesome) grain for those managing blood sugar levels (Prameha). Its complex carbohydrates release energy slowly, preventing sudden insulin spikes and providing sustained satiety throughout the day.
3. Hridya (Heart Health)
Rich in magnesium, copper, and antioxidants, Jowar is considered Hridya (beneficial for the heart). It helps in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels and supports the Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) by providing essential minerals.
4. Pitta-Shaman (Cooling & Alkaline)
For individuals prone to acidity, heartburn, or internal heat, Jowar is an excellent choice. Its cooling nature helps soothe the digestive lining and reduces the "Daha" (burning sensation) often associated with high Pitta imbalances.
How to Use Jowar
The Traditional Jowar Bhakri
Create a gluten-free flatbread (Bhakri) using Jowar Flour. Since Jowar is naturally dry, Ayurveda suggests adding a small amount of Desi Cow Ghee to the dough or over the cooked bread to balance its dryness for Vata types.
Jowar Upma or Porridge
Use whole or cracked Jowar to make a savory breakfast porridge. Season it with Turmeric and Dry Ginger to enhance its Deepana (digestive-kindling) properties.
A Digestible Grain Mix
If you find 100% Jowar difficult to knead, mix it with a small portion of Bajra or gram flour. This enhances the protein profile and creates a more balanced "Tridoshic" meal.

Safety Guidelines
Vata Caution: Since Jowar is naturally "Ruksha" (dry), people with high Vata (chronic constipation or dry skin) should always consume it with Ghee or oil.
Hydration: Because of its high fiber content, ensure you drink adequate water throughout the day to support smooth digestion.
Thorough Cooking: Always ensure Jowar is well-cooked; undercooked millet can be heavy (Guru) on the stomach.
